Ave Maria by Jacques Arcadelt — Lyrics
About Ave Maria
For generations of Catholic choirs, Jacques Arcadelt’s "Ave Maria" has been a beloved staple of the choral repertoire. This solfa transcription, edited by the renowned Nigerian musicologist Laz Ekwueme, brings the classic sixteenth-century piece into a format that our local choirs can easily read and master. The setting is famous for its gentle, flowing homophony, where all four voice parts move together in a quiet, unified prayer.
When we sing this arrangement, the focus is entirely on the sacred text. The opening "Ave Maria, Gratia plena" rises with a quiet reverence, capturing the mystery of the Angelic Salutation. As the music moves into the petition "Sancta Maria, Ora pro nobis," the repeated pleas for Mary's intercession build a sense of deep, communal devotion before settling into a peaceful final "Amen."
Choirs often bring this piece out during the Marian months of May and October, or for the Offertory and Communion processions on feasts of the Blessed Virgin. It requires careful attention to dynamics and breath control, asking singers to listen closely to one another to achieve a smooth, blended sound. It is a quiet, centering prayer that always brings a profound stillness to the church.
