About Ave Maria, gratia plena
Jean Mouton was a leading composer of sacred polyphony in the Franco-Flemish tradition. His motet Ave Maria, gratia plena is written for two four-part choirs (SATB, ATTB). The Latin text is a Marian antiphon, setting the words of the Annunciation and expanding upon the sacred presence of the Virgin Mary. Mouton’s setting emphasizes the devotional aspect of the text, with the interwoven choirs creating a rich sonority. This motet offers a powerful and moving musical reflection on the Annunciation and the role of Mary. It is a significant example of Renaissance sacred music.
