AVE MARIA by Bach - Gounod — Lyrics
About AVE MARIA
The Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" holds a special place in the choir loft. Charles Gounod took the gentle, rolling chords of Johann Sebastian Bach’s first prelude and floated a soaring, deeply emotional melody right over the top. For many Catholic choirs, this piece is a beloved challenge. It requires breath control, a smooth legato, and a sense of deep reverence, especially when the sopranos reach for those high, floating notes near the end.
We often bring this out for Marian feast days, weddings, or as a quiet meditation piece during Communion. This particular handwritten solfa arrangement includes both the traditional Latin text and a lovely English adaptation, allowing the choir to choose the words that best fit the moment. Singing "ora pro nobis" to this sweeping tune always feels like a profound moment of prayer, lifting the entire congregation's hearts toward our Blessed Mother.
