AVE MARIA

Franz Schubert’s "Ave Maria" is one of the most universally recognized and deeply loved melodies in the Catholic choral repertoire. Originally composed in 1825, its sweeping, prayerful lines have echoed through countless choir lofts. This specific arrangement brings the classical work into the hands of Nigerian choirs through a clear tonic sol-fa adaptation, originally prepared for the St. Gabriel the Archangel Choir in Benin.

Singing this piece requires immense breath control and a gentle, unified tone from the singers. Marked *Lento Assai* (very slowly), the music asks us to take our time, letting each phrase of the angelic salutation breathe. The first verse carries the joyful greeting of the Archangel Gabriel, while the second verse shifts into the Church’s petition for Mary’s intercession at the hour of our death.

We often bring this out for Marian feast days, solemn moments of reflection after Communion, or during the signing of the register at weddings. When the choir swells on the repeated "Maria, gratia plena" and softens back into the final, whispered "Ave Maria," it creates a profound stillness in the church, drawing the whole congregation into a moment of quiet devotion to Our Lady.
