Attollite by Samuel Webbe — Lyrics

Prima sabbati. Psalmus David. Domini est terra, et plenitudo ejus; orbis terrarum, et universi qui habitant in eo. Quia ipse super maria fundavit eum, et super flumina praeparavit eum. Quis ascendet in montem Domini? aut quis stabit in loco sancto ejus? Innocens manibus et mundo corde, qui non accepit in vano animam suam, nec juravit in dolo proximo suo: hic accipiet benedictionem a Domino, et misericordiam a Deo salutari suo. Haec est generatio quaerentium eum, quaerentium faciem Dei Jacob.

About Attollite

This setting of the Latin text Attollite portas, principes, vestras (Lift up your gates, O princes) is a powerful motet for SATB choir. The scripture, drawn from Psalm 23 and other biblical sources, begins with a declaration of God's dominion over the earth and its inhabitants. It then poses the question of who may ascend the Lord's hill, answering that it is the pure of heart and righteous in deed. The text builds to a triumphant call for the eternal gates to be lifted for the King of Glory, identified as the Lord, strong and mighty. Samuel Webbe's composition, sung in its original Latin, would suit occasions of solemnity or exaltation, reflecting the majestic and devotional nature of the words.
