Assumpsit Iesus Petrum

The words of this motet paint the scene of the Transfiguration, where Jesus takes Peter, James, and John, and is transformed before them. A voice from heaven declares, "This is my beloved Son." Claudio Merulo sets this biblical narrative in a powerful motet for a large choir, split into two distinct choirs: SAATTB and STTTTB, STTBBB. This allows for dramatic contrasts and rich textural possibilities, ideal for a grand sacred setting. The Latin text is drawn directly from the Gospels, offering a profound reflection on Christ's divine nature.
