Assumens Jesus Petrum by Jacobus Vaet — Lyrics
About Assumens Jesus Petrum
Jacobus Vaet’s Assumens Jesus Petrum is a motet of considerable textural richness, written for a large choir of SAATTB, ATTTTB. The composer explores the dramatic potential of the Transfiguration narrative with a luxuriant, polyphonic style characteristic of the later Renaissance. Vaet masterfully divides his forces to create a dialogue between different vocal groups, building to moments of great sonority. The Latin text, drawn from the Gospel account of Matthew, describes Jesus’s transfiguration before Peter, James, and John, with his face shining like the sun and his garments becoming white as snow. The music captures the awe and divine radiance of this pivotal biblical event, offering a profound and moving experience for both choir and listeners.
