About Ascendo ad patrem meum
Johann Walter’s Ascendo ad Patrem meum is a five-part motet for SAATB, setting a text drawn from the Gospels. The opening verses depict Christ’s Ascension, proclaiming 'I ascend to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' The composer’s treatment of this glorious text emphasizes its solemnity and triumphant character. Further settings of biblical verses follow, speaking of the promise of the Holy Spirit as a comforter and truth-giver, and the joy that this promise brings to the disciples’ hearts. The motet concludes with a text describing Christ’s blessing of his disciples as he is carried up into heaven, a powerful and uplifting summation of the sacred event.
