Andrea Gabrieli, a pivotal figure of the Venetian school, composed this sacred motet. Angelus Domini descendit a 7 is written for SSAATTB, eight voices in total, allowing for rich harmonic textures and dynamic contrasts. The Latin text, drawn from the Gospels, recounts the angel's message at the empty tomb: the resurrection of Christ. The music would have been intended for liturgical use, its grandeur fitting for a major feast day.
