About Alma Redemptoris Mater (voci pari)
This Marian antiphon is one of the most celebrated votive antiphons, sung throughout Advent and Christmastide. Palestrina's setting, conceived for a choir of up to eight voices in various combinations of equal voices, brings out the textual beauty of this ancient prayer. The composer’s masterful counterpoint illuminates the longing of the text for the Mother of the Redeemer, the gate of heaven and star of the sea, to help her fallen people. It praises her unique role as Mother of God, conceived without sin, and invokes her mercy. This is a sublime example of Renaissance sacred polyphony, ideal for liturgical occasions or concert performance.
