About Alma Redemptoris Mater
Mariano Garau sets a well-known Marian antiphon in this moving SATB setting. The Latin text, traditionally sung or recited during Advent and Christmastide, addresses the Virgin Mary as the Mother of the Redeemer, the gate of heaven, and the star of the sea. It calls upon her to aid a people who have fallen but strive to rise. The composer reflects the text's devotional character, with the choir's voices weaving together to express the plea for mercy and the wonder at Mary's role as the mother of God, born while nature stood astonished. The music conveys both the reverence due to the 'Virgo prius ac posterius' and the humble appeal of sinners.
