About Alma Redemptoris Mater
Riccio's Alma Redemptoris Mater is written for two solo voices, soprano and bass. The music opens with a gentle, flowing melodic line that establishes a devotional mood. The two voices often engage in a simple, imitative dialogue, creating a sense of intimate reflection. This sacred votive antiphon is set in its original Latin. The text, a Marian antiphon, speaks of Mary as the mother of the Redeemer, the gate of heaven, the star of the sea, asking her to aid her people who strive to rise from falling. It praises her miraculous conception and recalls the angelic greeting, before pleading for mercy for sinners.
