About Alma parens dilecta Deo

Orlando di Lasso's SATTB motet Alma parens dilecta Deo is a powerful setting of a Latin text invoking divine protection. The words speak of a beloved mother, the delight of the heavens, and the anchor of life and salvation, without whom no safe harbour can be found. The choir is urged to remain on the path of righteousness, steadfast against any corrupting influences. The composer presents this plea for guidance and favour in times of peril with rich, imitative polyphony, the voices of the choir weaving together to express the fervent supplication of the text. This motet would be particularly fitting for services of supplication or for occasions when a choir wishes to explore the profound devotional expression of the late Renaissance.
