Agnus Dei by Benedictus Appenzeller — Lyrics
About Agnus Dei
Benedictus Appenzeller's Agnus Dei for double choir (ATBB.ATBB) is a powerful setting of the familiar Latin text. The composer skilfully divides the liturgical text between the two choirs, creating a rich, imitative texture. The pleas of "Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi" (Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world) are voiced with a compelling sense of urgency, alternating between the choirs before their combined pleas for mercy "miserere nobis" and ultimately "dona nobis pacem" (grant us peace). This sacred work offers a profound musical reflection on the central themes of sacrifice and peace within the Mass.
