About Ad Dominum cum tribularer
This setting of a psalm verse was written for five-part choir (SAATB), setting the Latin text from Psalm 119. The words express a cry for help in times of distress: 'I called upon the Lord in my trouble, and he heard me. Lord, deliver my soul from lying lips and from a deceitful tongue.' It would suit occasions of penitence or supplication, perhaps within a service of Evensong or Matins. Jacob Regnart was a Franco-Flemish composer active in the latter half of the 16th century, known for his motets and secular works. This sacred motet showcases his contrapuntal skill in setting devotional texts.
