Absterget Deus by Jacob Handl — Lyrics
About Absterget Deus
This six-part motet by Jacob Handl sets a text of profound comfort and hope, drawn from the Book of Revelation. The music opens with the promise that God will wipe away every tear, and there will be no more suffering. Handl's SAATBB setting, in Latin, masterfully conveys the scriptural message of a future free from hunger, thirst, sorrow, and pain. The composer, a significant figure in the late Renaissance polyphonic tradition, crafts rich vocal textures to express the ultimate peace and fulfillment described in the text. This sacred work offers a powerful musical reflection on divine solace.
