KYRIE (HAUSA)

"Kyrie (Hausa)" is a straightforward, reverent setting of the Penitential Rite sung in the Hausa language. During the introductory rites of the Mass, the choir and congregation use these words to acknowledge their shortcomings and ask for God's compassion before entering fully into the Liturgy of the Word. The gentle, steady rhythm of the arrangement guides the singers through a posture of humility and grace.

The piece follows the traditional threefold structure of the Catholic Kyrie. It opens with the solemn call "Ya Ubangiji, ka yi mana jinkai" (Lord, have mercy), shifts its focus to the Son with "Ya Kristo" (Christ, have mercy), and finally returns to the Father with "Ya Uba". Because the melodic phrases are repetitive and clear, it is very easy for the assembly in the pews to pick up the responses and sing along. This creates a unified, prayerful atmosphere in the church as everyone prepares their hearts for the rest of the Mass.
