Ya Ubangiji

"Ya Ubangiji" is a reverent setting of the Kyrie in Hausa, composed by the well-known Nigerian liturgical musician Jude Nnam. Sung during the Penitential Rite at the beginning of Mass, the title translates to "Lord, have mercy," with the choir and congregation pleading "ka yi mana jinkai" (have mercy on us).

The arrangement carries a gentle, solemn tone that fits the moment of seeking God's forgiveness. As the voices layer and repeat the central plea, first to the Lord (Ubangiji) and then to Christ (Kristi), it draws the faithful into a posture of humility and grace. It is a familiar and moving piece in many Nigerian parishes, especially when celebrating liturgies that reflect the diverse languages of the church.
