When a choir prepares for a major festival or a special Christmas concert, we look for music that offers both spiritual depth and vocal brilliance. This expansive two-part choral work delivers exactly that, bringing together two distinct Nigerian languages and moods into one magnificent presentation. It opens with "Se Se Do Nt'Obong Ofond'ido Y'ami," a majestic Efik song of adoration by Boniface S.A. Inyang. Here, the choir lifts up a powerful sound of worship, praising the Lord’s mercy, strength, and enduring love. The harmonies are rich and reverent, setting a tone of awe before the altar.
The piece then transitions into "Immanuel," an original Igbo Christmas carol by Anokwuru Paschal C. The energy shifts entirely, bursting into a joyful, rhythmic call to action: "Ngwanu ụmụnne m" (Come, my brothers and sisters). The lyrics invite us to hurry to Bethlehem to see the newborn King, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah. As the voices layer over one another, mimicking the ringing of Christmas bells ("mgbirigba ekeresimesi"), the choir brings gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the manger. It is a thrilling, complex arrangement that challenges the singers while filling the congregation with the true celebratory spirit of the Nativity.
