Priestly People

"Priestly People" is one of those foundational hymns that immediately brings a congregation together. Composed by Fr. Lucien Deiss, its triumphant refrain draws directly from the First Letter of Peter, reminding us of our shared identity as a chosen, royal, and holy priesthood called to worship. When the choir leads that opening line, it sets a tone of dignity and purpose that fills the entire church.

We most often use this piece as an Entrance or Recessional hymn. The steady, marching rhythm of the melody makes it perfect for the procession to the altar. What makes it so versatile, though, are the ten verses. They unfold as a litany of praise to Christ, addressing Him as the Morning Star, the Son of Mary, the Lamb, and the Messiah. Because of this rich imagery, it fits beautifully on feast days like Christ the King, during the Easter season, or simply on a bright Sunday in Ordinary Time when the liturgy calls for a strong, unifying song of praise.
