HOLY SPIRIT, LORD OF LIGHT by JUDE NNAM — Lyrics

REFRAIN Holy Spirit Lord of light, from the clear celestial height. The pure beaming radiance give. VERSE 1 Holy Spirit, Lord of Light, from the clear celestial height. O Thy pure beaming radiance give. Come, thou Father of the poor, come with treasures which endure; O come, thou light of all that live! VERSE 2 Thou, of all consolers best. Thou, the soul's delightful guest, O Dost refreshing peace bestow. Thou, in toil art comfort sweet, Pleasant coolness in the heat; O Solace in the midst of woe. VERSE 3

About HOLY SPIRIT, LORD OF LIGHT

"Holy Spirit, Lord of Light" is a vibrant choral setting of the traditional Pentecost Sequence (Veni Sancte Spiritus), composed by Jude Nnam. Sung just before the Gospel Acclamation on Pentecost Sunday, the sequence is an ancient, poetic invocation calling upon the Holy Spirit to descend with comfort, healing, and divine light.

Nnam's arrangement brings a joyful, driving energy to this solemn prayer. Marked Allegro, the piece opens with a bright refrain that the choir returns to after each stanza. The verses carry the faithful through the full text of the sequence, moving from a plea for the "Father of the poor" to a prayer for the Spirit's sevenfold gifts. It is a staple for Nigerian Catholic choirs during the feast of Pentecost, lifting the congregation's hearts as they celebrate the birth of the Church and the outpouring of the Holy Ghost.
