Onyiri Onwu by Ugochukwu Martin — Lyrics
About Onyiri Onwu
"Onyiri Onwu" is a joyful, fast-paced Easter anthem that rings out with the triumph of the Resurrection. From the very first notes of the introduction, the choir issues a bright, urgent invitation to the congregation: let us go to Galilee to see Jesus, the one who has risen from the grave. It captures that electric Sunday morning feeling when the church realizes the tomb is truly empty, setting a lively tempo that keeps the whole choir loft energized.
The title itself names Christ as the "Conqueror of Death." As the choir moves into the verses, the lyrics vividly describe how Jesus shattered the gates of the tomb and scattered the darkness. Singing "Ọnwụ, ọnwụ... i nweghi ike ọzọ" (Death, you have no power anymore), the voices build a powerful, rhythmic declaration of victory over the grave. It is a perfect piece for an Easter Sunday Mass, filling the sanctuary with Alleluias and reminding everyone of the eternal life won on the cross.
