Onyenwanyi Mee

"Onyenwanyi Mee" is a solemn and deeply moving Kyrie composed by Chidubem Dominic Okoli. Sung during the Penitential Rite at the very beginning of the Mass, it leads the congregation in a heartfelt, unified plea for God's mercy. The piece beautifully sets the standard liturgical tropes in Igbo—calling on the Lord who was sent to heal the contrite of heart, Christ who came to call sinners, and the Lord who pleads for us at the right hand of the Father.

In the choir loft, this arrangement offers a striking interplay between the lead voice and the full choir. The verses are delivered as gentle, flowing lines by the mezzo-soprano, reflecting on Christ's redemptive mission with a sense of quiet humility. In response, the rest of the choir enters with the grounded, harmonised refrain, "Onyenweanyi mee ebere" (Lord, have mercy).
