Oluwa, Saanu Fun Wa

When we gather for Mass, the Penitential Rite sets the tone for everything that follows. "Oluwa, Saanu Fun Wa" brings that moment of reflection into the Yoruba language, offering a direct and humble plea for God's mercy. E. Oluwaseun Adelodun’s setting captures the quiet reverence of this prayer, giving the choir and congregation a chance to center themselves before the Liturgy of the Word begins.

The arrangement is built on a very natural call-and-response structure. A cantor or tenor soloist introduces the plea—"Oluwa, saanu fun wa" (Lord, have mercy) and "Kristi, saanu fun wa" (Christ, have mercy)—before the full choir answers in four-part harmony. This back-and-forth mirrors the traditional flow of the Kyrie, allowing the voices to build a collective sense of contrition.

Musically, the piece is marked Largo, keeping the tempo slow and deliberate. It does not rush the prayer. Instead, the steady progression of the notes gives the singers room to breathe and mean the words they are singing. The "Da Capo al Fine" instruction at the end of the Christe section naturally returns the choir to the opening Oluwa, completing the familiar three-part structure of the rite and grounding the congregation in a shared moment of grace.
