O COME, O COME EMMANUEL

"O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is the definitive sound of the Advent season. When we sing those haunting, minor-key opening notes, it instantly shifts the atmosphere in the church from ordinary time to a period of deep, expectant waiting. The melody carries a sense of longing that perfectly captures the spirit of a congregation looking forward to the Nativity.

We use this most often as an Entrance hymn during the four weeks of Advent. The verses walk us through the ancient titles of Christ—Wisdom, Lord of might, Rod of Jesse, Key of David—building a sense of anticipation week by week. By the time the choir and congregation join together on the refrain, "Rejoice! Rejoice!", that initial solemn longing breaks into a confident promise that the Lord is indeed coming.
