Nwaturu Chineke by C.D Okorie — Lyrics
About Nwaturu Chineke
"Nwaturu Chineke" is a reverent Igbo setting of the Agnus Dei, composed by C.D Okorie. Sung during the fraction rite just before Communion, this piece leads the congregation in the ancient plea to the Lamb of God. The music carries a gentle, steady walking pace, creating a moment of quiet reflection as the altar is prepared for the Eucharistic meal.
Okorie’s arrangement uses staggered vocal entries, with the lower voices introducing the central phrase before the sopranos join in. The choir repeats the petition "onye ne kpochap' njo nk'uwa" (who takes away the sins of the world), resolving twice into the humble prayer "M'er'anyi ebere" (have mercy on us). On the third and final repetition, the harmony shifts to deliver the concluding "Nye anyi udo" (grant us peace), bringing the rite to a calm and hopeful close.
