Ndi Nke m'

When the altar is bare and the church falls silent on Good Friday, few pieces carry the emotional weight of the Reproaches. "Ndi Nke m'" (My People) is a poignant Igbo setting of this ancient liturgical text, placing the sorrowful words of Christ directly before the congregation. The refrain asks a piercing question: "Ndi nke mu eh! Gịnị kam mere unu?" (My people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you, that you nailed me to the cross?). It is a moment that shifts our focus from the physical pain of the Passion to the heartbreak of divine love rejected.

Paschal Anokwu’s arrangement gives each verse a distinct voice, allowing different soloists or sections to recount the saving acts of God. The verses walk us through salvation history—feeding the Israelites in the desert, healing the sick, and delivering them from slavery in Egypt. Against these acts of profound mercy, the choir sings of the crowd's betrayal: turning their backs, choosing Barabbas, and abandoning their King. The repeated plea, "Ndi nke mo za nu mo!" (My people, answer me!), echoes through the church, demanding a response from every listener in the pews.

For a choir, singing this piece requires deep sensitivity. The tempo is marked Andante, and the delivery should be expressive and unhurried, letting the gravity of the words sink in. As we lead the congregation in venerating the cross, this song serves as a powerful mirror. It reminds us that the story of Good Friday is not just a historical event, but an ongoing reality of God's enduring faithfulness in the face of our human failings.
