About MENENE ZAN BAKA

"Menene Zan Baka" is a deeply reflective Hausa hymn that centers on a fundamental question of worship: what can we possibly offer to God? Composed by Dauda Zih, the song explores the true nature of our gifts. The lyrics contrast material wealth with spiritual surrender, reminding the congregation that earthly possessions are not what the Lord desires most.

During the verses, the choir's voice parts weave together different examples of material gifts. The sopranos sing that God could easily refuse money or a house ("Ko na baka kudi... zaka iya ki"), while the lower voices echo similar thoughts with their own examples of clothes or livestock. They all converge on the true, acceptable offering: a promise to give God their hearts and their thanks.

This piece is a natural choice for the Offertory. As the gifts are brought to the altar, the choir leads the faithful in a shared act of self-giving. It grounds the liturgy in genuine devotion, moving beyond physical tokens to offer God the glory He truly seeks.
