Maboza, Maboza

"Maboza, Maboza" is a vibrant Zairean folk hymn that has become a beloved staple for the Offertory procession in Nigerian Catholic parishes. Arranged here for SATB choir by Ike Eseka, the piece carries the unmistakable rhythmic joy and communal spirit of Congolese sacred music. It is a song that naturally gets the congregation swaying and stepping in time as they bring their gifts to the altar.

Sung in Lingala, the lyrics center entirely on the joyful presentation of the community's offerings. The verses call upon every group in the church family—the fathers ("ba papa"), the mothers ("ba mama"), the priests ("ba sango"), and the youth ("ba bilenge")—to come forward. As they present the bread and wine ("mampa no vito"), the choir sings the repeated, earnest plea "tata oyamba," asking the Father to receive their gifts.

In the choir loft, this arrangement is a delight to sing. It builds beautifully from the ground up, starting with a steady, rhythmic pulse in the bass and tenor lines before the sopranos and altos enter with the bright, sweeping melody.
