LORD HAVE MERCY

When the choir leads the Penitential Rite at the beginning of Mass, we need a setting that draws the congregation into a genuine spirit of reflection. Johnpaul Chukwujekwu Okuor’s "Lord Have Mercy" does exactly this. It is an earnest, straightforward plea for God's compassion, built on the traditional English invocations of the Kyrie.

The arrangement gives the soprano line a clear, repeating melody that feels both urgent and reverent, while the lower voices provide a steady, grounding harmony. As the choir layers the phrases "Oh Lord have mercy" and "Christ oh Christ have mercy," the music creates a quiet space for the faithful to pause, acknowledge their shortcomings, and seek grace before the Liturgy of the Word begins.
