Lift up your heads, O ye gates! by George Fredrick Handel — Lyrics
About Lift up your heads, O ye gates!
When a choir wants to announce the arrival of the Lord with absolute majesty, few pieces do it better than this classic chorus by G.F. Handel. Taking its text directly from Psalm 24, "Lift up your heads, O ye gates!" is a thrilling, triumphant anthem that demands energy and bright, ringing voices from the very first measure. It is a staple for grand liturgical celebrations, especially during Advent as we prepare for Christ's coming, or on feast days that celebrate His kingship and victorious entry.
What makes this piece so engaging to sing is the dramatic dialogue between the voice parts. The upper voices call out with the question, "Who is the King of Glory?" and the lower voices answer with bold conviction, "The Lord strong and mighty!" As the piece builds, all the parts weave together in a glorious, overlapping polyphonic declaration that the Lord of Hosts is indeed the King of Glory. It takes some practice to master the timing and the running notes, but when a choir locks into those massive final chords, it lifts the entire congregation.
