About Lieb und Vernunfft
Jacob Regnart’s Lieb und Vernunfft is a secular German madrigal for two sopranos and bass (SST). The text describes an internal struggle between love and reason. Love drives the singer forward with desire, while reason attempts to hold them back. Despite efforts to control passion with logic, the singer finds themselves overwhelmed, fearing the worst. They call upon God for guidance, seeking to understand which path to follow according to divine will. This motet is well-suited for occasions demanding a reflective or philosophical mood, its three-part texture offering a clear and engaging dialogue between the vocal lines.
