Johann Michael Haydn, brother of the more famous Joseph, was a prolific composer of sacred music in the Classical tradition. This setting of responsorial psalm verses, dating from the late eighteenth century, is typical of the period. Sung in Latin, the text offers thanks to God for deliverance from enemies and promises eternal praise. The SATB voicing allows for rich harmonic texture, with moments of dialogue between the voices and unified pronouncements of faith. It is a concise and powerful expression of gratitude and devotion, well-suited to liturgical use.
