Barbara Strozzi's L'Eraclito amoroso is a secular Italian madrigal for solo soprano. The text expresses the profound sorrow of a lover betrayed by their idol. The singer laments the death of faith in their beloved, finding solace only in tears and grief. Every torment and pain becomes a source of delight, and sighs offer consolation. Despite the beloved's infidelity, the singer desperately clings to faith until death, wishing for eternal sadness and suffering to consume them entirely. Strozzi sets this text with an emotional intensity that reflects the lover's despair and ultimately, their masochistic embrace of sorrow.
