About L'aspido pien di morte
This secular Italian villanella for SSB choir conjures a dramatic comparison between the singer's plight and the deadly asp and the enchanting Siren. The text draws parallels between the asp that closes its ears to healing and the cruel Clori who ignores the singer's pain, and between the Siren whose song lures sailors to their death and Clori whose 'song' kills the singer with her ingratitude. The composer Banchieri uses these vivid images to express the singer's deep suffering at the hands of his unfeeling beloved. The piece would suit a concert programme seeking to explore Renaissance-style secular vocal music with a touch of dramatic flair.
