"Eloi Eloi Lama Sabachtani" is a heavy, mournful piece that brings the congregation face-to-face with the reality of Good Friday. Taking its title from Christ’s agonizing cry from the cross—"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"—the song is a staple for Holy Week and Lenten reflections. It does not just recount the historical events of the Passion; it asks the singers and the listeners to respond personally to the sacrifice.

The verses walk us through the sorrowful steps of the crucifixion. We sing of Pilate's judgment, the crown of thorns, and the soldiers casting lots for His clothes. When the choir reaches the refrain, the arrangement uses the different voice parts to build a scene of grief. While the lower voices carry the heavy, rhythmic cry of the title and the altos narrate the scene, the sopranos float above with a wailing, wordless "UH," before joining in the final "Lama Sabath Tani."
