La Vita

Mario Tento's La Vita is a secular work for SATB choir, sung in Italian. The music opens with a gentle interplay of voices, gradually building in intensity to reflect the text's poignant imagery. The composer evokes the quiet beauty of autumn's approach, where the steady passage of time is revealed alongside a sense of gentle surrender. The text speaks of a secret yielding, as if birds falling lightly from branch to branch, their wings no longer able to bear them. Tento's setting captures this delicate melancholy, with moments of hushed reflection contrasted by passages of greater harmonic richness, offering a moving meditation on transience.
