La Battaglia by Francesco Usper — Lyrics
About La Battaglia
The text of this substantial work is a jubilant Latin setting of Psalm 150, which calls for praise of God with every instrument and every kind of music. The composer Francesco Usper imagines a sonic 'battle' in praise of the Lord, evoking the sound of trumpets, drums, and cymbals. This grand Alleluja is written for double SATB choir, creating a rich and powerful sonic palette. It falls into the genre of sacred madrigal, a Renaissance form often characterised by vivid musical depiction of the text. The two choirs can be used antiphonally, to build towards the overwhelming final exhortation: Omnis spiritus laudet Dominum! All the earth praise the Lord!
