Kozar by Stevan Mokranjac — Lyrics
About Kozar
This vibrant partsong for double choir (SSATTBB) opens with a lively, energetic character, immediately drawing the listener into its rustic Serbian folk setting. The music vividly portrays the text, which tells a humorous tale of a young man, initially unmarried, who becomes the village goatherd. The villagers value him and give him goats. He is so pleased that he buys more goats with the money he earns. However, one of his goats dies, leading him to lament its loss with a dramatic and impassioned plea. The composer captures the narrative's shifts in mood from bustling village life to a moment of personal grief, all within the rich textures of the choir.
