About Kolartro
Ludvig Norman's Kolartro is a four-part setting for SATB voices of a Swedish secular text. The music opens with a sense of joyful nature, with the voices weaving together to depict the singer and the responsive echo in the forest. This idyllic scene is then disrupted by the arrival of charcoal burners, whose coarse and menacing shouts are represented musically. The text further describes a tender moment between lovers that is again interrupted by the charcoal burners, who misunderstand the couple's affection as an affront to their honor. The song uses this narrative to explore themes of misunderstanding and perhaps the clash between rustic simplicity and refined sentiment.
