About Kingston
Daniel Belknap’s Kingston is a setting of a Latin text, Psalm 137, also known as the Lament of the Exiles. The text laments the sorrow of the Israelites exiled in Babylon, remembering their homeland and questioning how they can sing the songs of Zion in a foreign land. Belknap’s SATB setting, with its English translation alongside the Latin, draws directly from the poignant biblical narrative. The music captures the deep sadness of the text, yet also hints at the fervent hope for remembrance and eventual retribution for the oppressors, providing a powerful and moving experience for both performers and listeners.
