Singable in Holy Week, this is the third responsory from Tenebrae, Matins of the first three days of the Paschal Triduum. The text describes the betrayal of Jesus by the impious, the chief priests and elders. It continues to narrate Peter's following of Jesus from afar, observing the unfolding events. The musical setting by Tomás Luis de Victoria for eight voices (SSAT, TTBB) masterfully conveys the drama of the text. Victoria's skill in depicting the narrative and emotional content is evident throughout this powerful Latin motet, making it a fitting selection for the solemn liturgy of Holy Week.
