JEMA! by Paschal St. Val Abugu — Lyrics
About JEMA!
"Jema!" (which translates to "Let us go!" in the Northern Igbo dialect) is a vibrant recessional hymn that perfectly captures the spirit of the dismissal at the end of Mass. Subtitled "Song of the missionary," the piece opens with the familiar declaration "A ja Missa gwula O!" (The Mass has ended), immediately setting the scene for the congregation to depart in peace.
Composed by Paschal St. Val Abugu, the song is a joyful call to action. It reminds the choir and the faithful that leaving the church doors is just the beginning of their work. The lively chorus urges everyone to go out and preach the Good News ("jee kaara ha oziọma") to all nations, so that peace may reign.
With its energetic rhythm and rich harmonies, this piece is a favorite for the end of Sunday worship. It transforms the final procession into a true missionary march, sending the people home with a sense of purpose and a joyful spring in their step.
