Jean de Castro was a composer of chansons in the late Renaissance. This secular French song is set for three voices (SST). The text expresses the singer's lament over having loved an ungrateful mistress too much, feeling that his youth has been wasted. He feels his reason is being overcome by this unhappy love, and that his efforts to please her have been in vain.
