About IYA MIMO

"Iya Mimo" is a gentle, flowing Yoruba choral piece dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Singing of the "Holy Mother," the song unfolds as a warm expression of gratitude for her maternal care. Right from the opening bars, the choir addresses Mary as the Holy Queen (Ayaba mímọ́) and the Mother of Jesus Christ, thanking her for the deep affection she shows to us, her children.

The arrangement by Daniel Ebhomien gives the choir a chance to sing with real tenderness. Midway through the piece, the lower voices introduce a joyful, rhythmic call—"Ta ló sọ pé a ò ní Màmá o" (Who says we do not have a Mother?)—to which the sopranos and altos brightly respond, affirming that we indeed have a Mother in Mary. This conversational shift brings a lively, communal feel to the music, mirroring the confidence a congregation feels in Mary's intercession.

Choirs often bring this piece out during the Marian months of May and October, or for feasts dedicated to Our Lady. It works beautifully as an Offertory or Communion meditation, offering the congregation a moment to reflect on Mary’s enduring care. The repeating harmonies and the sweet, lingering "Uh, Maria" passages make it a joy to rehearse and a deeply moving song to sing from the loft.
