IWE GI DAJUO

"Iwe Gị Dajụọ" is a solemn and deeply moving intercessory chant composed by Chukwujekwu Nweke, specifically written for the Prayer of the Faithful. In the Nigerian Catholic Mass, the universal prayer is a moment where the congregation brings its collective needs before God. This piece elevates that liturgical action, turning the standard spoken response into a heartfelt choral plea. The title translates to a humble petition for God to calm His anger and look upon His people with mercy.

The arrangement is structured to give every section of the choir a voice in the supplication. After the full choir establishes the main plea in the chorus, the verses are handed off to individual voice parts—starting with the tenors, moving to the altos, then the sopranos, and finally the basses. Each section calls upon God using powerful Igbo attributes, from "Olisa bi n'igwe" (God who dwells in heaven) to "Amaamamasiamasi" (the Omniscient One).

What makes this setting so effective in worship is its gentle, pleading rhythm. The recurring refrain, "Onye dị ngọzi, si n'igwe bịa za 'nyị o Papa" (Blessed One, come from heaven and answer us, Father), anchors the congregation in a posture of trust.
