About Invano ascondi il vero
Annibale Zoilo's Invano ascondi il vero sets a secular Italian text in which the poet laments the perfidy of a lover who has turned their heart to someone new. The music expresses the bitterness and resignation of rejection, as the poet declares that their love will never again flourish. This five-part madrigal for SAATB voices is a fine example of Renaissance part-music, rich with the expressive harmony and imitative counterpoint characteristic of the genre.
