About In un bel bosco
Luca Marenzio sets a Petrarchan sonnet in this exquisite Italian madrigal for six voices (SATTTB). The text describes a lover's pursuit by Cupid in a beautiful, leafy wood. The poet's heart is ensnared by the 'blonde tresses' of his beloved, depicted as 'treacherous nets' cast by the god of love. The imagery evokes a sense of playful capture, with the poet willingly returning to the 'sweet snare' and the 'charming wood' to seek his lost heart amongst the flowers. Marenzio's music would have vividly portrayed this delicate yet intense emotional landscape, characteristic of the secular polyphony of the late Renaissance.
