Ciro Pinsuti's partsong for SATB voices, In this hour of softened splendour, opens with a gentle, flowing melodic line introduced by the sopranos, soon joined by the other voices in a rich, homophonic texture. The music beautifully evokes the hushed atmosphere of a moonlit night, with the interplay of the SATB voices creating a sense of tender longing. The English text speaks of a lover's plea under the soft light of the moon, asking for encouragement to declare his passion. The composer captures the delicate sentiment of the words, with flowing vocal lines and carefully crafted harmonies that build to moments of heartfelt expression. It is a charming example of Victorian secular part-music.
