Composed for the Holy Week service of Tenebrae, this setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah by Tiburtio Massaino powerfully conveys the sorrow of Jerusalem's destruction. The SATTB voicing allows for rich, imitative textures, colouring the profound grief expressed in the Latin text. Massaino captures the prophet Jeremiah's lament for the desolate city, now widowed and oppressed, and the pain of exile and lack of comfort. The music reflects the profound sadness of its liturgical context, with the text describing the tears of the abandoned city and the anguish of its people.
